After service in the Army and experience on the stage and TV, this rugged-looking character actor got his film career rolling with a series of films by sexploitation guru Russ Meyer: Cherry, Harry & Raquel (1969), Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), The Seven Minutes (1971), and Super Vixens (1974). Napier eventually went on to more prestigious efforts and is probably best known for his frequent performances for director Jonathan Demme, starting with Handle With Care (1977, as the bigamist trucker Chrome Angel), and including Last Embrace (1979), Melvin and Howard (1980), Swing Shift (1984), Something Wild (1986), Married to the Mob (1988, as Michelle Pfeiffer's hairdresser), The Silence of the Lambs (1991, as one of the cops who's attacked by Anthony Hopkins), and Philadelphia (1993, as the Judge). He has also appeared in The Blues Brothers (1980), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985, as Marshal Murdock), Miami Blues and The Grifters (both 1990), and has maintained a presence in low-budget movies, with roles in films like Thunder and Lightning (1977), Deep Space (1987, starring as an alien-chasing cop), The Night Stalker (1987, starring as a serial killer-chasing cop), Hit List (1989), and Center of the Web (1992).
