Dark, exotic leading man with broad stage experience who never fared as well on film; neither his looks, nor his aloof demeanor, were suited to conventional leading-man roles, though he did star in the 1979 production of Dracula. He has found more opportunity in recent years as a character actor, particularly in villainous parts. He debuted on-screen with a juicy role as Carrie Snodgress' lover in Diary of a Mad Housewife and followed that with The Twelve Chairs (both 1970), The Wrath of God (1972), The Mark of Zorro (1974, playing the title role in this made-for-TV movie), Those Lips, Those Eyes (1980, very entertaining as a down-on-his-luck actor romancing local lasses in a small town), Sphinx (1981), The Men's Club (1986), Masters of the Universe, And God Created Woman (both 1987), True Identity (1991), and 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992). In 1993 he snared two plum supporting roles, as Madonna's humiliated former lover in Body of Evidence and as the power-hungry Chief of Staff in the White House comedy Dave He appeared next in Brainscan (1993), Bad Company and Cutthroat Island (both 1995).
