This gruff but likable actor graduated from the stage to supporting work in late 1960s films before starring in Haskell Wexler's brilliant, cinema-verité-style drama Medium Cool (1969), as a TV cameraman who's become an observer instead of a participant in life. (It also gave him a groundbreaking, full-frontal nude scene.) Earlier, he had attracted critical attention in Reflections in a Golden Eye (1967), a bewildering misfire costarring Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor. Although he starred in two 1970s crime series on TV"Nakia" and "Banyon"-and in the cult favorite Alligator (1980), the brooding, darkly handsome Forster failed to achieve feature-film success. In recent years he has become something of a favorite thanks to the burgeoning home-video market, appearing in The Banker (1989), Satan's Princess (1990), and Committed (1991), among others. He also had supporting roles in Delta Force (1986, as a Middle Eastern terrorist) and 29th Street (1991). Forster made his directorial debut with 1985's Hollywood Harry in which he also starred.
